Gypsy's Tune

Ted Russell Kamp

GYPSY’S TUNE
Ted Russell Kamp

Her Ford pulled over in the pale moonlight
Gypsy called and told me where
Just you and me and a fire tonight
You’ll know it when you see me there

I picked up my coat and went down to the store
And got a couple o’ bottles of red
After a country mile and a sunset smile
This is what Gypsy said

Ch: Follow the road ‘till the city lights die
And then look up at the stars
The pinholes in the sky and the tear in your eye
Are gonna take this Gypsy far

We made love by campfire light
And then she said she had a dream to find
Maybe head out now through the heartland towns
And look me up on down the line

I went back to town, back to work
The dawn lit the road ahead
Machines are hot and running with the factory’s hum
But I could still hear what she said

Ch

Br: Oh, Sing your song for me
Tell me stories and weave your yarns
Oh, Gypsy, give to me another memory
To fill my heart while we’re apart

That was 15 years ago
Now I got a downtown apartment bid
My wife is a distant memory
But the Gypsy’s eyes are in my kids

I never did hear from her again
‘Cept maybe once on the radio
It was late at night by campfire light
I could have sworn I heard that song before
