So Far Down

Briege Murphy

Sleep was hard to come by,
On the night before she left.
Bleary eyed next morning,
She rose and combed her hair.

Taxi outside waiting,
And her few belongings packed.
The elevator broke again,
She struggled down the stairs.

And the rain come to the window,
Was the tears she could not weep.
Behind her the promises,
He'd never tried to keep.

She's driving on empty,
And she's never gonna stop.
So far down this time round,
The only way she knows to go,
Is up.

She didn't leave a note,
He'd never read it.
Didn't say goodbye,
He'd never heed it.

Going' through the motions daily,
Time and time again.
She's going through the streets,
To catch a somewhere going' train.

And the rain on the window,
Was the tears she could not weep.
Behind her the promises,
He'd never tried to keep.

She's driving on empty,
And she's never gonna stop.
So far down, this time round,
The only way she knows to go,
Is up.

Love is like a fire at its brightest.
Needs a constant fuel
To make it warm the darkest night.
Sometimes we neglect to keep it kindled.
The coldest story's told When we awake the morning light.

And the rain on the window
Were the tears she could not weep.
Behind her the promises,
He'd never tried to keep.

She's driving on empty,
And she's never gonna stop.
So far down, this time round.
The only way she knows to go,
Is up.
