Came out of mourning, washed the violet from her mane
Was it an omen, the horses circled on the plain?
We waited for the sky to drop
Oh, as we called upon the name
We didn't want the storm to stop
We wanted everything to changeOh, how we hope you know
That we do the best we can, do the best we can
We never knew that you would notice
If we had known it, we could have planned for the rain
Do the best we can, do the best we canOur wells had faltered, the fruit it died upon the vine
Misplaced the farmer, poured forth the bitter wine
The age is moving in and out
Washing the eighties from the earth
Beyond the shadow of the drought
Beyond the shadow of the droughtOh, how we hope you know
That we do the best we can, do the best we can
We never knew that you would notice
If we had known it, we could have planned for the rain
Do the best we can, do the best we can
