There in a town of Knoxville I used to live and dwell
And in that little Knoxville town I owned a flour mill
I fell in love with a Knoxville Girl with dark and rolling eyes
I promised her I’d marry her it was she’d never deny
I asked her to take a walk with me down to the meadow gate
That we might have a social talk and name our wedding day
We walked along we talked alone till we came to the level ground
And there I picked up a hickory stick and knocked that fair girl down
I stabbed her with a dagger which was a big long knife
I threw her in the river which was a dreadful sight
In about six weeks or later that Knoxville girl was found
Flowing down to Stillwater beach that flows from Knoxville town
Her Sister swore my life away they swore without a doubt
They swore that I was the very Lad that laid their Sister out
And now they’re going to hang me, the death I dread to die
