He used to play guitar.
He had the style, he had the heart.
He could have been better than most of them
but he never made the stars.
Someone said they might have seen
someone who might have been him
stumbling in a haze again
looking kind of beat on a dead-end street
down near where the junk man is.
The junk man, he will sell you things,
things you don't need to buy --
a broken doll that always cries,
a clock with broken springs,
a bird with broken wings,
a broken pair of dice.
And so I guess my friend is gone
and I'm remembering a song I once heard him sing.
But if I have the song
all that the junk man's got
is one more broken thing.
