The Light
Through the doors, I am home
Back to the only place I've ever really belonged
To this tower that I found
As a child seeking shelter from the storm
Half a century in vain
I wandered
In a world that did not want me
Now I'm finally home again
Back to this lonely light
Down by the sea
And the walls still stand so solid
And the light still scrapes the sky
In the wind I hear the echos
Of countless tragedies gone by
And I could never understand it
Why some foundered on the shoals
And why I've always felt such kinship
For this light and it's lost souls
And as I light a fire to warm me
The ghosts come swirling round my head
First to welcome then to warn me
Remind me of all the tears they've shed
And they know I won't be leaving
Now that I'm back where I belong
And they know someday I'll join them
Because this light, it must stay on
So tomorrow I'll be burning
All those bridges that I've crossed
Cutting loose the memories
Of all that I have lost
And I'll pray the world forgives me
Because I never said goodbye
But I don't need what it wouldn't give me
Now that I've got the sea and sky
So each night I'll climb the stair
And light the light
That takes all their fear away
And when they need me I'll be there
And I won't rest
Til they're safely home to stay
