TOM CHANG jazz guitar
Born is Seoul, South Korea in 1965, Tom's family immigrated to Toronto Canada two years later. Tom began taking guitar lessons at the age of 12 in Vancouver, Canada studying classical guitar technique with Ron Phillips. His musical interests quickly turned to the more electric side of the guitar being heavily influenced by Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix which ultimately lead to the pursuit of improvised music in the form of blues and jazz.
In 1984, Tom moved to Los Angeles to further his studies in jazz guitar at the Musician's Institute where he studied and played with jazz greats, Joe Pass, Robben Ford, Joe Diorio, and Howard Roberts. Tom was also heavily active in the L.A. pop scene performing with Luther Vandross and Sandra Bernhard.
Tom moved to Boston in 1987 to study jazz composition at the Berklee College of Music, where he eventually took private guitar lessons with world renowned guitarist/teacher Mick Goodrick.
In the fall of 1988 Tom moved to New York city and has since played with many of the top names in jazz including, Greg Osby, Mike Stern, Jim Hall, Joey Calderazzo, and Rodney Holmes.
Currently, Tom leads his own quartet, which incorporates contemporary and classical
