A Child Like Grace Lyrics

A child like grace
I wish you could've seen her face
How bright that sunflower shoneWith a child like grace
Running all around the place
It should be said, "My, how you've grown"She was only three
When she taught herself to read
I do not like them, Sam I amShe taught us how to love
We learned so much but not enough
I'm sure that's when we learned to give a damnShe will grace our lives no more
She was only four
She died before she was fiveNow it's a grave mistake
God in His wisdom makes
What does he care? He fashioned us from clayNow lay me down in a bed of sunflowers
Overgrown and wild
I've survived my own childSee the fields and meadows crying, yeah
Proud dandelion heads turned gray
Now the wind in a puff blows you awayMary had a baby

Michelle Shocked (born Dallas, Texas, February, 1962) is the stage name of Michelle Karen Johnston, an American singer-songwriter. As a young feminist, she left Texas to travel, Kerouac-style, and was caught up in Reagan-era grassroots politics. Her musical career was ignited by a bootleg recording made around a Kerrville Folk Festival campfire on a Sony walkman. Released in England as ‘The Texas Campfire Tapes’ without Shocked’s authority, its success abroad enticed Mercury Records to offer the newcomer a recording contract.
