Back In The Days Lyrics

Straight outta Flatbush
Always tek it back
(Whoa oh)
Fi yuh peeps
(Whoa whoa whoa oh)
Don't worry about it, it's been brought up
'Cause you never know what your gonna turn out to be
(No oh ooh ooh)
Life has it's funny twist and turns yuh nah mean
(Yay yay)
Back in the days, tried and failed but look at me now
How, things have changed, had no friends but look at me now
It, seems so strange, no one cared but look at me now
Fortune and fame, who would guess but look at me now
Friends, spend nuh time wid dem
I was the kid who never follow many trends
Used to wear the glasses with the soda bottle lens
Girls didn't like me and a few would just pretend

It's funny back in school the guys that were so cool
Are the very ones who wish them could a be walkin' inna mi shoes
Now tell me whose the fool, them never have a clue
That's why I'm here to dedicate this song to all of you, hey hey
Back in the days tried and failed but look at me now
(The days)
How, things have changed had no friends but look at me now
(How things changed)
It, seems so strange no one cared but look at me now
(So strange)
Fortune and fame who would guess but look at me now
(Ooh wee)
I, never realized
I could make reality di tings I fantasize
Stuck to my plan and to everyone surprised
Even those who doubt a stand before mi mesmerized
I bloom delay a late, I couldn't get an eight
Di cheerleadin' chicks grew up to all be overweight
See now I lookin' greta, I wonda what they ate
To that I'm really happy wid my supermodel date, hey hey
Back in the days tried and failed but look at me now
(I know)
How, things have changed had no friends but look at me now
(Shooby dooby doo, yeah)
It, seems so strange no one cared but look at me now
(I know, I know)
Fortune and fame who would guess but look at me now
(No no)
If you think you got it figured out well listen to me
Don't ever underestimate what people can be
Now whose the one that's most likely to succeed
It's usually the one's you don't see, hey
If you think you got it figured out well listen to me
Don't ever underestimate what people can be
Now whose the one that's most likely to succeed
It's usually the one's you don't see, come again
Back in the days tried and failed but look at me now
(Back in the days)
How, things have changed had no friends but look at me now
(How things have changed)
It, seems so strange no one cared but look at me now
(So strange)
Fortune and fame who would guess but look at me now
(Oh)
Back in the days tried and failed but look at me now
(Back in the days)
How, things have changed had no friends but look at me now
(How things have changed)
It, seems so strange no one cared but look at me now
(So strange, hey)
Fortune and fame, who would guess but look at me now
Ooh, back in the days
How things have changed, said a rearranged, hey
Back in the days
How things have changed, How things have turned, oh

Shai is an Pop/R&B/Soul quartet debuted in 1992. Their biggest hit in the mainstream is an a capella single, "If I Ever Fall in Love," which made #2 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

Shai was formed at Howard University in Washington D.C. Three of the four members, Marc Gray, Carl Martin, and Darnell Van Rensalier, belonged to the same fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, and along with good friend, Garfield A. Bright, decided to take a chance at turning their hobby of singing into a career. Moving to New York City, New York, the foursome tried to secure a record deal, but they couldn't find any takers. With their money running out and their future looking bleak, the members of Shai took a chance on a radio contest that radio station WPGC was sponsoring. They chose to perform a song that Carl Martin wrote, "If I Ever Fall in Love," which they sang a cappella. The song won the contest and began finding airplay on WPGC. Other stations soon followed, and suddenly the record labels came calling. After signing with Gasoline Alley, Shai began putting together its debut album.

"If I Ever Fall in Love" was the first single and peaked at #2 in the U.S. The next two releases from the double-platinum album, "Comforter" and "Baby I'm Yours" both reached #10. The group's next CD was a remix album largely consisting of new versions of their previous hits, which resulted in a revised version of the song "Baby I'm Yours" simply titled "Yours" which peaked at #63. Future efforts fell shy of the Top 40 although the group did briefly reappear there in 1994 with the #34 "The Place Where You Belong" from the Beverly Hills Cop III soundtrack. The group's last charting single was 1996's #89 single "I Don't Wanna Be Alone". Shai is still active releasing such albums as "Destiny" (1999), "Back From The Mystery System: The Love Cycle" (2004), "Love Cycle: Back From The Mystery System" (2007) and "Worldwide (as D-n-G of Shai" (2009).
