Basin Street Blues Lyrics

Won't you come along with me
To the Mississippi
We'll take a boat to the land of dreams
Steam down the river, down to New OrleansThe band's there to meet us
Old friends there to greet us
Where all the proud and elite folks meet
Heaven on earth, they call it Basin StreetBasin Street is the street
Where the best folks always meet
In New Orleans, land of dreams
You'll never know how nice it seems,
Or just how much it really meansGlad to be, oh yes-sirree
Where welcome's free and dear to me
Where I can lose, lose my Basin Street BluesBasin Street, oh Basin Street
Is the street, mama
New Orleans, land of dreams

LaVerne Butler is a superb but underexposed jazz singer whose main influences include Nancy Wilson and Sarah Vaughan. Butler is originally from Shreveport, LA, where she grew up listening to jazz and R&B extensively with a lot of encouragement from her father, saxophonist Scott Butler. After leaving Shreveport, she moved to New Orleans, where she studied music at the University of New Orleans and become a fixture in the city's Dixieland and bebop venues.
