Best Imitation of Myself Lyrics

I feel like a quote out of context
With holdin' the rest
So I can be for you what you want to see
I got the gestures and sounds
Got the timin' down
It's uncanny, yeah
You'd think it was meDo you think I should take a class
To lose my Southern accent?
Did I make me up
Or make the face 'til it stuck?
I do the best imitation of myselfThe problem with your speech
You gave me was fine
I liked the theories about my little stage
And I swore I was listenin'
But I started driftin'
Around the part about me
Actin' my ageAnd now if it's all the same
I've people to entertain

I juggle one-handed
Do some magic tricks and
The best imitation of myselfMaybe I'm thinkin' myself in a hole
Wonderin' who I am?
When I ought to know?
Straighten up now time to go
Fool somebody else
Fool somebody elseLast night, I was east with them
And west within tryin' to be for you
What you want to see
But I can't help it
With you the good and bad comes through
Don't want you hangin' out
With no one but meNow if it's all the same
It comes from the same place
And if my mind's somewhere else
You won't be able to tell
I do the best imitation of myselfYes, it's uncanny to see
You'd really think it was me
The best imitation of myself
Do the best imitation of myself

Ben Folds Five is a trio formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, United States in 1994, who until their breakup in 2000 were a mainstay of piano rock. Much of their work was influenced by jazz, evident in frequent improv-styled passages through bridge and/or ending. The members of the band are Ben Folds, the lead singer and pianist, who also wrote most of the songs; Robert Sledge on bass; and Darren Jessee on drums. The group enjoyed the success of the single Brick in 1997, a ballad written by Folds (with a chorus by Jessee) about his high school girlfriend getting an abortion.
