Black Gold (With Algebra Blessett) Lyrics

Hold your head as high as you can
High enough to see who you are, little man
Life sometimes is cold and cruel
Baby no one else will tell you so remember thatYou are black gold, black gold
You are black goldNow maybe no one else has ever told you so
But you're golden, baby
Black gold with a diamond soulThink of all the strength you have in you
From the blood you carry within you
Ancient men, powerful men
Built us a civilizationThey'll be folks hell bent on putting you down
Don't get burned (don't get burned)
Not necessarily everyone will know your worthThink of all the strength you have in you
From the blood you carry within you
Ancient men, powerful men
Built us a civilization
Think of all the strength you have in you
Powerful, powerful men
Built us a civilizationHold your head as high as you can

High enough to see who you are, little man
Life sometimes is cold and cruel
Baby no one else will tell you so remember thatYou are black gold, black gold
You are black goldThink of all the strength you have in you
From the blood you carry within you
Ancient men, powerful men
Built us a civilization
Think of all the strength you have in you
Ancient men, powerful men
Built us a civilizationHold your head as high as you can
High enough to see who you are, little man
Life sometimes is cold and cruel
Baby no one else will tell you so remember thatYou are black gold, black gold
You are black goldYou are black gold, black gold
You are black goldYou are black gold, black gold
You are black goldYou are black gold, black gold
You are black goldHold your head as high as you can
High enough to see who you are, little man
Life sometimes is cold and cruel
Baby no one else will tell you so remember thatYou are black gold, black gold
You are black gold
You are
You are
You are
Hold your head up
Don't give up
You are black gold
You are
You are
Black gold

Born in 1984, bassist, singer and composer Esperanza Spalding began playing in small jazz and blues venues around her hometown of Portland, Oregon. Soon after picking up the acoustic bass at the late age of 14, she helped form Noise for Pretend, an eclectic band fusing jazz and pop for which she sang and played bass (often simultaneously). The group signed with indie rock imprint Hush Records, which released two albums of their original compositions.
