Blackpool Lyrics

Blackpool, 10 o'clock
If everybody's ready, let's punk rock
Look at him with the safety pin
Yeah, turn it up and let's begin, let 'em inBlackpool, Friday night
I really wanna do it, do it tonight
Yeah, look at him with the safety pin
Turn it up and let 'em in, soLet 'em in, let 'em in, let em in
Let 'em in, let 'em in, let 'em inBed and breakfast up the tower
Hey baby, do you want it louder?
Yeah, I'm the one with the safety pin
I'm the one that said, "Let 'em in", soLet 'em in, let 'em in, let em in
Let 'em in, let 'em in, let 'em inTurn it up, turn it up loud
Turn it up loud for the Blackpool crowdYeah, I'm a punk and I'm so proud
I wanna turn it up, turn it up loud
'Cos I'm the one with the safety pin
I'm the one that said, "Let 'em in", soLet 'em in, let 'em in, let em in
Let 'em in, let 'em in, let 'em inTurn it up, turn it up loud
Turn it up loud for the Blackpool crowd

Sham 69 formed in Hersham, Surrey in 1976 (the 12 November issue of NME notes they were rehearsing at this time, although only Jimmy Pursey would remain from this early line-up 12 months later). Sham 69 lacked the art school background of many British punk bands of the time, and brought in football chant back-up vocals and a sort of inarticulate political populism. The band had a large skinhead following (left wing, right wing and non-political), which helped set the tone for the Oi! movement.
