Blacks' Magic Lyrics

Magic, I'd like to send this one out to the partner
Pepa MC, magic, and her first born, whatever it may be, magic
Yo Spin, once again help me get this crowd on it's feet
So we can set it off, I've got your back, Salt
You know I'm never soft, yo where's your records at?
Right beside me, ready to give a scratch? Yep, like poison ivy
It's the nineties, the year for change, can you prove it?
I made this beat, I'm an invincible and I produced it
It's in my soul to roll and flow, take control
Sold the show, can go like a pogo stick
Hot hit, dop, dip, rock, rip, don't shop on my hit list
'Cuz I can be a witch if, they say music is cool
And it can calm the savage beast
Then we got plenty of beats for the beasts to eat
A party animal that's livin' rather large, in fact
Take out the camera, Salt, why? I wanna picture that
Make sure it's focused or you may only not have noticed
Before I cut up a jam I yell a 'Hocus Pocus'

And right before your eyes you'll understand the name
Musicians and magicians are usually the same
And the fame, proclaim, obtains the stain, will gain a rain
That pours, it soars my brain to yours
Ordained by law to train the poor
I'll make sure that there ain't gonna be no more
It's a treachery hidden up the sleeves of men
Magic will only work for those who do believe in them
Black magic, it's black magic, do you believe in black magic?
It's black magic, I believe in black magic, it's black magic
Do you believe in black magic? It's black magic, I believe in
We call this song 'Black Magic' 'cuz it's a fact
Anything that's tragic relates to black
Coincidental? No, here's an example, Jack
Words as ancient as fossils or artifacts
Black Sunday or Monday, black tongues or lungs
May 'cause a black sleep, why say black sheep?
Black Sabbath is evil, black market illegal
A black widow is deadly, black potion ain't healthy
See, some try to say dark skinned men ain't sexy, true
Darker the cherry, you know how sweet will be the juice
Music's the only thing that brings the dead right back to life
Have faith and it will guide you through the night just like a light
Never say Salt steered you wrong inside a concert hall
My crystal ball can see the future, to the beat y'all
Magic, it's black magic, do you believe in magic? It's black magic
I believe in magic, it's black magic, do you believe in magic?
It's black magic, I believe in magic
And my feet in the street is black magic
And my soul in control is black magic
And the life that I live is black magic
Anything that I give is black magic
It's black magic, do you believe in magic?
It's black magic, I believe in
In magic, a dimension of sight and sound
Where people see in only shades of brown
And reality is the same as a fantasy
Is this the way you want your world to be?
Not me, I want variety in my society
Where I can change if I don't like what I see, you see
This is a woman speakin', bringin' door-to-door, seekin'
Tranquility, that ability will keep on repeatin'
To saw someone in half may be a trick or treat
Makin' them dance and laugh is somethin' quite unique
Abracadabra, Salt's comin' at ya
You say my music was a phase, a fad, huh
I proved you wrong, over ten years and still goin' strong
Whoever heard of a fad kickin' for so long?
Magic, it's black magic, do you believe in magic? It's black magic
I believe in magic, it's black magic, do you believe in magic?
It's black magic, I believe in black magic
And the life that I live is black magic
Anything that I give is black magic
And my feet in the street is black magic
And my soul in control is black magic
And the life that I live is black magic
Anything that I give is black magic
And my feet in the street is black magic
And my soul in control is black magic

Salt 'N' Pepa is an American rap / hip-hop group, consisting of Cheryl James ("Salt"), Sandy Denton ("Pepa"), and Deidre "Dee Dee" Roper (DJ Spinderella). They debuted with "The Show Stopper", a response record to Doug E. Fresh & Slick Rick's "The Show". It was an underground hit and Salt 'N' Pepa signed to Next Plateau. Their debut LP was Hot, Cool & Vicious (1986, which was produced by Salt's then-boyfriend, Hurby Azor, the group's manager, and he received songwriting credit for the album, though this was later disputed. According to AMG it also featured DJ Pamela Green, though they do not include her in their list of credits, and neither does the album sleeve.

Hot, Cool & Vicious received little attention until a San Francisco DJ named Cameron Paul created a remix of "Push It" (The b-side to "Tramp"). Mr. Paul's remix of "Push It", rereleased as a single, quickly became a national hit and was nominated for a Grammy, pushing both the single and LP to Platinum album status.

They released A Salt With a Deadly Pepa, which was only a minor hit, though it featured "Shake Your Thang". Their third original LP, Blacks Magic, which received generally positive reviews and expanded Salt 'N' Pepa's fanbase among hip hop fans using more R&B. It included "Let's Talk About Sex", one of their biggest songs.

Salt 'N' Pepa left Next Plateau and the influence of Azor released "Very Necessary", a largely self-produced album in 1993, and it performed very well on the charts, buoyed by "Shoop" and "Whatta Man" (with En Vogue). In 1994, they appeared in the motion picture "Who's The Man?".

The less commercially successful single "None of Your Business," won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance in 1995. Since Very Necessary, both Salt and Pepa have focused primarily on their acting careers. They released their final album "Brand New" in 1997.

Despite their girl group beginnings, Salt 'N' Pepa insist that they wrote many of the lyrics on their first album, and by Blacks Magic they displayed a sex positive, and responsible, feminism, and are often seen as innovators or role models.

In March 1999, Salt 'N' Pepa embarked on their final live tour. Pepa (Sandy Denton) married Treach of Naughty By Nature on July 27, 1999. Salt 'N' Pepa's greatest-hits album, entitled Salt 'N' Pepa: The Best Of was released on January 25, 2000. Treach and Pepa were divorced on July 31, 2001. The group officially disbanded in 2002. Upon disbanding, Salt (Cheryl James) claimed she had become a born-again Christian, and would no longer be involved in hip-hop. However, all that changed when Cheryl announced that she would be releasing her first solo cd "Salt of the Earth" which later changed to "Salt Unrapped".

Cheryl James and Sandy Denton appeared on VH1's Hip Hop Honors in November 2004 without Spinderella. They did not perform.

In March 2005, it was announced that Sandy Denton would join Jose Canseco, Bronson Pinchot, Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth, Caprice Bourret, Janice Dickinson, and Carey Hart on the 5th season of the VH1 series The Surreal Life.

Salt 'N' Pepa reunited on September 22, 2005, and gave their first performance in six years. They sang Whatta Man, along with En Vogue, as a part of VH1's Hip Hop Honors program.
