California Screaming Lyrics

Once upon a time a king had a dream
Then three L.A. cops made another king scream
The Crips and the Boods said enough is enough
Where's the peace and love when the going gets tough
California screaming
While America's dreaming
California screaming
While America's screaming california screaming
While America's screaming
The haves have it all, the have nots have not
Did you hear about the teen queen stopped by a shot
Lying on the sidewalk dressed up in blood
A quiet L.A. evening in the summer of love
California screaming
While America's dreaming
California screaming
While America's screaming california screaming
While America's screaming

The boy in the hood says he's only thirteen
Chained up in gold but he thinks that he's free
The price of his future is measured in grammes
Weighing him down in the city of the damned
California screaming
While America's dreaming
California screaming
While America's screaming california screaming
While America's screaming
I want justice
I have been so blind to all the heartache and crying
All alone in my room
I never knew that you could be so cruel
'tho your cheatings gonna be your doom

The Selecter were a British ska revival band from Coventry, formed in the late 1970s as one of the essential bands of the British ska movement. Much of what set apart The Selecter from many of the other ska bands at the time was the voice of Pauline Black. She had to disguise herself as a man in order for the band to get gigs, but once they did, there was no disguising her voice. Like other ska bands of this movement, The Selecter featured a racially mixed line up, and songs about violence, politics, marijuana, a fictional spy's theme song, James Bond, and reggae classics.
