Charmless Callous Ways Lyrics

Charmless callous waysI have been in league with cruelty
And charmless callous ways
I have been betrayed into believing
That those who never win should never playNothing succeeds quite like success
And to be doomed to second best
I mistook for failure
Nothing more and nothing less
But if hate is peace and love is war
There's nothing there I feel's worth fighting forAnd anything that's not my way
Anyway that's not my wayDisdain to be a grown-up fool
Who plays by adolescent rules
Where to be king is to be cruel
And constancy's an unprized jewel
Now I've abandoned all those crimes
And we'll endure without church bell chimes

Everything But the Girl (EBTG), was a Hull, Yorkshire, UK, folk-pop / trip-hop duo of Ben Watt and Tracey Thorn. They débuted with a single for a Cole Porter cover, Night And Day (Mar 1982, Cherry Red). Their final album was Temperamental (Sept 1999, Virgin). Ben met Tracey when they were at Hull University and she was singing in pop girl-band Marine Girls. Ben contributed a photograph, for a forthcoming album cover, after which, the pair became partners (later getting married).
