Closer to You Lyrics

Well I've tasted love so sweet
Played around but not for keeps
I never been knocked off my feet
Till you came along
In the room surrounding me
Are angels I cannot see
I know they come to carry me to
Where I belong
Closer to you, closer to you
I'm singing like a sailor strutting up your avenue
Like a clown in a costume shop
With a pocket full of jewels
All the knocks upon your door
Footsteps fallen on your floor
All the shipwrecks on your shore
Mean nothing to me

All the crooks on Capitol Hill
Criminals on the dollar bills
All the money on Wall Street still
Couldn't keep me from getting
Closer to you. Closer to you
Like a priest on a pulpit preaching to an empty room
Like a drunk in a dive bar in the early afternoon
Closer to you.
Poets could not pronounce your name
Gamblers couldn't play the game
Matchstick statues set to flame
Couldn't hold a candle to you
Swindlers on the Sunset strip
Hypnotists and hypocrites
Ventriloquists and Pickpockets
Wish that they could get
Well I've tasted love so sweet
Played around but not for keeps
I never been knocked off my feet till you came along
I sit through the trickery
The jealousy and vanity
The potency of your prophesy
Because I long to be
Closer to you. Closer to you
Like a hound dog in a junkyard honey
I'm howling at the moon
Like a Pirate in a pawnshop with a pocket full of jewels
Closer to you [Repeat: x3]
I'll get through
Oh baby I'll get through
Closer to you

Christabel and the Jons is a southern swing band based in east Tennessee that blends familiar standards with modern vintage sounding originals. Their music is acoustic and colorful, a blend of Appalachian mountain music and vintage swing. The group saunters and sways together with ease. Lead singer Christa DeCicco steals hearts with her come-hither delivery and charismatic stage performance. Her songwriting is heartfelt and nostalgic, and her distinctive, sultry voice brings it all home. Old suitcases and dressy vintage costumes from the 1920s-1950s give the performance a torch singer, speakeasy feel.

Since the spring of 2005 this quirky band has been performing and recording their distinctive style of folky swing. In November of 2006 they released their first official album, "Love and Circumstances.”

Christabel and the Jons is currently recording their highly anticipated second album, which is as of yet untitled... Meanwhile they continue to tour, mostly around the southeast region but with periodic voyages to the northeast, southwest, and pacific northwest. They can often be found in thrift stores as they travel from town to town, hunting for clip-on ties and 1950s party dresses.

Influences include: Nina Simone, Bob Dylan, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Greg Brown, Peggy Lee, Ray Charles, Malcolm Holcombe, The Red Stick Ramblers, Jolie Holland, Iron & Wine, Muddy Waters, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Taj Mahal, Joni Mitchell, Willie Nelson, Mississippi John Hurt, Paul Simon, The Beatles, the everybodyfields, Elvis, Feist, Madeleine Peyroux, Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, Floyd Tillman, The Roots, Van Morrison, Al Green, National Public Radio, This American Life, Prairie Home Companion
