Dust Bowl Lyrics

I should know to leave them home
They follow me through the store
With these toys I can't afford
Kids, take them back, you know better than that
Dolls that talk, Astronauts, TV games, airplanes
They don't understand and how can I explain?I try and try but I can't save
Pennies, nickels, dollars slip away
I've tried and tried but I can't saveMy youngest girl has bad fever, sure
All night with alcohol
Tryin' to cool and rub her down
Ruby, I'm tired, I'm tired, try and get some sleep
I'm adding doctor's fees to remedies
To the cost of three day's work lostI try and try but I can't save
Pennies, nickels, dollars slip away
I've tried and tried but I can't saveThe hole in my pocketbook is growing
"There's a new wind blowin'", they say
It's gonna be a cold, cold one
Brace yourselves my darlings

'Cause it won't bring anything much our way
But more dust bowl daysI played a card in this week's game
I took the first and the last letters
In three of their names
This lottery's been buildin' up for weeks
I could be lucky me with the five million prize
Tears of disbelief spillin' out of my eyesI try and try but I can't save
Pennies, nickels, dollars slip away
I've tried and tried but I can't saveThe hole in my pocketbook is growing
"There's a new wind blowing", they say
It's gonna be a cold, cold one
Brace yourselves my darlings"There's a new wind blowing", they say
And it's gonna be a cold, cold one
Brace yourselves my darlings
'Cause it's gonna be a cold, cold one"There's a new wind blowing", they say
And it's gonna be a cold, cold one
So brace yourselves my darlings
'Cause it won't bring anything much our way
But more dust bowl days

Natalie Anne O'Shea Merchant (born October 26, 1963 in Jamestown, New York, U.S.) is a professional musician. She co-founded and fronted the band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981. Later, she went to college and then left the band in 1993 and started a successful solo career. Merchant plays the piano, produces and writes many of her songs.

Her debut solo album Tigerlily (1995) had three top-40 singles: 'Carnival', 'Jealousy' and 'Wonder'. This was followed in 1998 with her second solo album Ophelia, her third in 2001 with Motherland, and fourth in 2003 called 'The House Carpenter's Daughter'.

Merchant has sung alongside Tracy Chapman, Michael Stipe, David Byrne and Peter Gabriel. She has also collaborated with Billy Bragg a number of times, including the 1998 album Mermaid Avenue. Like Bragg, her work touches on social and political themes; she has been active in promoting a number of campaigning issues in both her songs and through the causes to which she lends her name.
