Echo Lyrics

Like an echo
I can't believe what I saw in you (in you)
For me to think that it was just us two (us two)
But you talking to her while she talking to him
Then it gets to his girl (girl), then it gets to my friend (friend)
She said, "Girl you just gotta let him go" (him go)
"I'm your best friend so I had to let you know" (you know)
I don't know where to start, it's like he breaks my heart
And through it all, I still can't deal with us being apart
Been in life eighteen years but cried a million tears
My mama told me, "Auburn, you're too young to deal with this"
She said, "You're just a kid," I tell her, "Yes, I know"
I think it's 'bout time that I let him go
Baby, I'm sorry, I'm sorry
Like an echo

Baby, I love you, I love you
Like an echo
Baby, I'll change, I'll change
Like an echo
But you're still the same, the same
I gotta let go
Baby, I'm sorry, I'm sorry
Like an echo
Baby, I love you, I love you
Like an echo
Baby, I'll change, I'll change
Like an echo
But you're still the same, the same
I gotta let go
It's safe to say I know what's in store (in store)
You'll call my phone and I'll press ignore (ignore)
You roll up to my house (house), my brother says, "Get out" (out)
You're yelling, "Baby, please tell me, what's all of this about?"
But I know you're lying, telling me you're trying
I try to stay strong but inside I'm merely dying
Can't take the pain no more (more), I've been through this before (fore)
This time I'm ready to get over you and close the door
This time you've gone too far, don't want your gifts or cards
Time that I realize and accept you for who you are
I'm closing up my heart, not gonna see me cry
Won't be an echo when I say goodbye
Baby, I'm sorry, I'm sorry
Like an echo
Baby, I love you, I love you
Like an echo
Baby, I'll change, I'll change
Like an echo
But you're still the same, the same
I gotta let go
Baby, I'm sorry, I'm sorry
Like an echo
Baby, I love you, I love you
Like an echo
Baby, I'll change, I'll change
Like an echo
But you're still the same, the same
I gotta let go
It's clear you don't understand what I mean
(Why I'm on play you're on repeat)
There can be no you and me, oh
(Guess it's time that I let you know)
And even though I still love you
(I can't deal with all that you do)
I mean it when I say we're through
(And it's time that we let it go)
Baby, I'm sorry, I'm sorry
Like an echo
Baby, I love you, I love you
Like an echo
Baby, I'll change, I'll change
Like an echo
But you're still the same, the same
I gotta let go
Baby, I'm sorry, I'm sorry
Like an echo
Baby, I love you, I love you
Like an echo
Baby, I'll change, I'll change
Like an echo
But you're still the same, the same
I gotta let go
It's time for me to let go

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is a rock band formed in 1976 from Gainesville, Florida, USA and led by Tom Petty.

Petty has been supported by his band, The Heartbreakers, for the majority of his career. He has occasionally released solo work, as was the case with his 2006 album Highway Companion on which he performed most of the backing instrumentation himself. However, members of The Heartbreakers have played on each of his solo albums and the band has always backed him when touring in support of those albums.

After the Petty's previous band Mudcrutch disbanded, Petty, never one to give up, enlisted Mudcrutch members Tench (keyboards) and Mike Campbell (guitar), along with Gainesville musicians Ron Blair (bass) and Stan Lynch (drums) to form the now famous lineup that was dubbed Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. They released their first album, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in November 1976. In 2006, the band celebrated the 30th anniversary of that release.

This lineup stayed intact for four records and was responsible for some of the most infectious songs ("American Girl", "Breakdown", "Listen To Her Heart", "Refugee", "I Need To Know", "Don't Do Me Like That") and one of the most critically acclaimed albums ("Damn the Torpedoes") of all time. Their tremendous success catapulted them from club band to arena rockers seemingly overnight.

Bassist Blair split the band in 1982 and was replaced by Howie Epstein, a protege of seminal rocker Del Shannon. Epstein's solid playing and soaring backing vocals further complemented the band's live attack. Without missing a beat, they headed back into the studio to record a string of successful albums, including the classic "Long After Dark". In 1994, Stan Lynch left the Heartbreakers to pursue other musical challenges and Steve Ferrone (well regarded for his work with the Average White Band and Eric Clapton) soon became the Heartbreakers' chosen drummer.

Most recently, at a time when many of their contemporaries have long since grown complacent, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have in 2002 released one of their finest and most controversial efforts - featuring some of Petty's most moving songs. Recorded both before and following the group's 2002 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, "The Last DJ", reflected Petty's strong views about the state of the music business and the culture generally. With the departure of Howie Epstein, "The Last DJ" marked another notable return: after two decades away, founding Heartbreaker Ron Blair returned to the band's rhythm section.

On "The Last DJ", Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers salute the album's title charter as "the last human voice". And while one dearly hopes Petty won't be the last such voice, he remains one of music's most compelling and most human voices.

In 2010, The Heartbreakers released the well received album "Mojo".
