Evangeline Lyrics

She said, "You are not my lover"
So don't look at me that way
Just 'cause I let you touch me
Don't mean I'll let you stayShe said, "Lovers try to change me
The minute I care"
But baby when I'm dancin'
I dance on air, I dance on airAnd all the other dancers
They fade in smoke and blue
And money comes from Heaven
God's alive baby
Yes, he comes throughEvangeline
EvangelineShe moves, I can't stop watching
The dirty stage, it's her home
And on my skin her touch lingers
And it's worse
Than bein' alone, than bein' aloneAnd all the other dancers
They fade in smoke and blue
And my money buys me time here

Where the beer lights and the neon nights
Make a shadow out of youEvangeline
EvangelineShe floats out of the spotlights
She won't look my way
I'm gonna sit here waitin'
'Til the night, turns to dayEvangeline

Mary Gauthier (born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1962) is an American country and folk singer/songwriter. Given up at birth by a mother she never knew, Mary was adopted. At age 15, she ran away from home and stole her parents' car, and spent the next several years in detox, halfway houses, and living with friends; she spent her 18th birthday in jail. These experiences provided fodder for her songwriting later on (particularly her song "Drag Queens in Limousines").
