Futile Devices Lyrics

It's been a long, long time since
I've memorized your face
It's been four hours now since
I've wandered through your placeAnd when I sleep on your couch
I feel very safe
And when you bring the blankets
I cover up my faceI do love you
I do love youAnd when you play guitar I listen
To the strings plus
The metal vibrates underneath
Your fingersAnd when you crochet
I feel mesmerized and proud
And don't say 'I love you'
With saying it out loudIt's hard so I won't say it at all
And I won't stay very longBut you are the life I needed all along
I think of you as my brother
Although that sounds dumb
And words are futile devices

Sufjan Stevens (pronounced "SOOF-yahn"; born July 1, 1975) is an American musician, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from Petoskey, Michigan. He is known for his lyrically focused and instrumentally rich songs that often relate to faith and family. He has enjoyed wide critical success in the United States. He is considered part of the folk revival through indie pop, but his influences are very broad, including experimental electronic music, the jazz of Vince Guaraldi, and the academic minimalism of Steve Reich and Philip Glass.
