Go Down Moses Lyrics

Movin' on, movin' on
Isn't that what I'm supposed to do?
Just hold it back and keep movin' on
Keep movin' on
Pushin' on, pushin' on
Isn't that what I'm supposed to do?
But it's so hard
To keep pushin' on
Pushin' onI'm movin' on, movin' on
Isn't that what everybody tells me I gotta do?
Oh, yeah
But it's so hard movin' on without youEvery mornin' wakin' in a fever
Where I'm shakin' (?)
My heart started pounding (?)
Muddy water all around me (?)
Cold, shocked and speechless, can anybody reach us?
And why?
Oh, God, why?Go down, go down, Moses

Go down, Moses
Go down to the city of New Orleans
City of New Orleans
Go back to muddy water (?)
---- muddy water
Let your people cross over
Go down, yeahI'm movin' on, movin' on
Keep movin'' on
That's what I'm tryin' to do
Just holding back and...movin' onKeeping on, keeping on, yeah
That's what I'm trying so hard to do
Oh, yeah
But it's so hard keeping on without youGone and lost my patience with this hopeless situation
Oh, yeah
I'm alive
I'm a lonely sole survivor
Spared me for some reason, so I'm picking up the pieces
But why?
Oh, God, why?Go down, go down, Moses
Go down, Moses
Go down to the city of New Orleans
City of New Orleans
And ---- ---- muddy water
---- the muddy water
Just let your people cross over
Go down, yeahGo down
Oh, Moses, go down
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, go down, Moses
Moses
Moses
Moses!
Sweet Moses!
Come on! Come on! Come on
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
Sweet Moses!
Sweet Moses!

Natalie Anne O'Shea Merchant (born October 26, 1963 in Jamestown, New York, U.S.) is a professional musician. She co-founded and fronted the band 10,000 Maniacs in 1981. Later, she went to college and then left the band in 1993 and started a successful solo career. Merchant plays the piano, produces and writes many of her songs.

Her debut solo album Tigerlily (1995) had three top-40 singles: 'Carnival', 'Jealousy' and 'Wonder'. This was followed in 1998 with her second solo album Ophelia, her third in 2001 with Motherland, and fourth in 2003 called 'The House Carpenter's Daughter'.

Merchant has sung alongside Tracy Chapman, Michael Stipe, David Byrne and Peter Gabriel. She has also collaborated with Billy Bragg a number of times, including the 1998 album Mermaid Avenue. Like Bragg, her work touches on social and political themes; she has been active in promoting a number of campaigning issues in both her songs and through the causes to which she lends her name.
