Goin' Down to Memphis Lyrics

Goin' down to Memphis and maybe get my ashes hauled
I can drive me a car man but I don't need no car at all
I believe I'll ride that Memphis cannon ballShe runs so fast you can't catch her from behind
Ah, she runs so fast and you can't catch her from behind
But I'll be there waitin' for that little Memphis girl of mineWhy I left guess I'll never know, no no
Why I left man, I guess I'll never know
Sittin' here thinkin' I'm one dumb-ass so and soI headed back that Memphis train she leaves real soon
The Memphis train sound like she leaves real soon
Got nothin' to guide me 'cept the color of the moon hangin' over MemphisHeaded down where the Mississippi runs
Boys I'm headed home back where the Mississippi runs
I hear there's some lovin' there try to get me someHeaded down to Memphis maybe get my ashes hauled
Just don't know why I ever left at all
I'm gettin' on that train, man I ain't even gonna call
Be there 'fore the break of day

Townes Van Zandt (John Townes Van Zandt, born at Fort Worth, Texas, March 7, 1944 and died at Smyrna, Tennessee, January 1, 1997). He was a country and folk singer and poet. While alive, Van Zandt was labelled as a cult musician. Though he had a small and devoted fanbase, he never had a successful album or single, and even had difficulty keeping his recordings in print. Many of his songs, including "If I Needed You," "To Live Is To Fly," and "No Place to Fall" are considered standards of their genre. AllMusic has called him "one of the greatest country and folk artists of his generation."
