Green, Green Grass of Home Lyrics

The old home town looks the same
As I step down from the train
And there to meet me is my Mama and PapaDown the road I look and there runs Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green, green grass of homeYes, they'll all come to meet me
Arms reaching, smiling sweetly
It's good to touch the green, green grass of homeThe old house is still standing
Though the paint is cracked and dry
And there's that old oak tree that I used to play onDown the lane I walk with my sweet Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
It's good to touch the green, green grass of homeThen I awake and look around me
At four gray walls that surround me
And I realize, yes, I was only dreamingFor there's a guard and there's a sad old padre
On and on we'll walk at daybreak
Again I'll touch the green, green grass of homeYes, they'll all come to see me
In the shade of that old oak tree
As they lay me 'neath the green, green grass of home

The Statler Brothers were an American country music vocal group founded in 1955 in Staunton, Virginia. Originally performing gospel music at local churches, the group billed themselves as The Four Star Quartet, and later The Kingsmen. In 1963, when the song "Louie, Louie" by the garage rock band also called The Kingsmen became famous, the group elected to bill themselves as The Statler Brothers. Despite the name, only two members of the group (Don and Harold Reid) are actual brothers and none have the surname of "Statler".
