Hang On To Your Soul Lyrics

She was pretty as she ever was
And that's saying something
Even with eyes red and tired
From losing sleep crying
Hadn't seen her since the golden summer
Of I can't remember when
We were young and strong and fearless
She said I guess life kicks us all around some
But if you hang on to your soul, that's enough
The only way you're gonna lose
Is to give up
Your mind will tell you
All kinds of crazy stuff
And life will break your heart
And drag it through the dust
But if you hang on to your soul, that's enough

Her face lit up like morning
When we talked about old friends
Who hung in, who dropped out
Who got lost and how the years came and went
She was fragile, she was funny
She was wounded, wise and sad
I guess nothing turned out the way we planned
But what are you gonna do
If you hang on to your soul, that's enough
The only way you're gonna lose, is to give up
Your mind will tell you
All kinds of crazy stuff
And life will break your heart
And drag it through the dust
But if you hang on to your soul
If you hang on to your soul
Well that's enough

A near constant presence on the Texas Music Chart since its inception as a songwriter, producer, singer, guitar player and artist, Wilkins spent a solid decade in the Nashville Country Music business trenches, writing songs he wanted to be recorded by artists he admired. There are indeed some noteworthy cuts: "Seven Hillsides," by Ricky Skaggs, on a record that won a bluegrass-gospel Grammy. "I didn'teven know there was a genre called 'bluegrass gospel," Wilkins laughs, "but I loved his recording of the song, and my grandmother would have loved the connection to a gospel Grammy.
