Hell of a Message Lyrics

I got a hell of a message from hell today, it said
"A lean dog shames his master"
Well nothing can ever be changed that way
his face turns to alabaster
The wonder of wonders of wondering, I said
"Why do you lay there like dirt?"
We'll think of those times and the bells will ring
Think that's better or does this hurt
I'm better now, the glass was warming
It's sad somehow to be performing
Food and bed, fortune and friends
Same old story, you know how it ends
A taste of temptation is teasing you, she says
"Who dares to reply?"
With all of my voice I call to you

But a thousand voices answer I.
I'm better now, the glass was warming
It's sad somehow to be performing
Food and bed, fortune and friends
Same old story, you see it begin
I'm better now, the glass was warming
I'm glad somehow to be performing
Food and bed, fortune and friends
Same old story, you know how it ends
Hell of a message

Gumball was the highest-profile occupation of indie gadabout Don Fleming, already a veteran of several bands, a guest collaborator for many more, and a significant producer who -- ironically -- helped shepherd alternative rock into its major-label boom years. As Gumball's singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter, Fleming's record-collector obsession with pop culture and pop music, from the Monkees to the Damned to Sonic Youth, reached full fruition.
