High Cotton Lyrics

We didn't know that times were lean
'Round our house the grass was green
It didn't seem like things were all that badI bet we walked a thousand miles
Chopin' cotton and pushin' plows
And learnin' how to give it all we hadAs life went on and years went by
I saw the light in daddy's eyes
And felt the love in mama's handsThey kept us warm and kept us fed
Taught us how to look ahead
Now lookin' back, I understandWe were walkin' in high cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Those fertile fields are never far awayWe were walkin' in high cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Leavin' home was the hardest thing we ever facedWhen Sunday mornings rolled around
We dressed up in hand-me downs
Just in time, together with the churchSometimes I think how long it's been
And how it impressed me then
It was the only day my daddy wouldn't workWe were walkin' in high cotton
Old times there are not forgotten

Those fertile fields are never far awayWe were walkin' in high cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Leavin' home was the hardest thing we ever facedWe were walkin' in high cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Those fertile fields are never far awayWe were walkin' in high cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Leavin' home was the hardest thing we ever facedWe were walkin' in high cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Those fertile fields are never far awayWe were walkin' in high cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Leavin' home was the hardest thing we ever faced
Walkin' in high cotton

Alabama is a country music band from Fort Payne, Alabama that was started in 1969 but did not get a recording contract until 1977. Alabama began by singing for tips around Myrtle Beach before going on to sell millions of records. They were among the first successful country groups since the mid-1970s, thanks to their blend of contemporary and traditional country and southern rock. On July 4-93 they opened a $7-million, 2,200-seat theater, located in Barefoot Landing-Myrtle Beach South Carolina.

The members of Alabama are:

- Randy Owen (vocals and rhythm guitar)
- Teddy Gentry, (vocals and bass guitar)
- Jeff Cook (lead guitar, keyboards, bass guitar, fiddle, banjo, and mandolin)
- Mark Herndon (drums and percussion)

Along with the Oak Ridge Boys and the Statler Brothers, Alabama is recognized as having paved the way for today's top country groups, including Diamond Rio, Lonestar and Rascal Flatts.
