House Carpenter Lyrics

"Well met, well met, my own true love
Well met, well met", cried he
"I've just returned from the salt, salt sea
All for the love of thee"I could have married the king's daughter dear
She would have married me
But I have forsaken her crowns of gold
All for the love of theeWell, if you could have married
The king's daughter dear
I'm sure you are to blame
For I am married to a house carpenter
And find him a nice young manOh, will you forsake your house carpenter
And go along with me?
I'll take you to where the grass grows green
To the banks of the salt, salt seaWell, if I should forsake my house carpenter
And go along with thee
What have you got to maintain me on
And keep me from poverty?Six ships, six ships all out on the sea
Seven more upon dry land

One hundred and ten all brave sailor men
Will be at your commandShe picked up her own wee babe
Kisses gave him three
Said, "Stay right here with my house carpenter
And keep him good company"Then she put on her rich attire
So glorious to behold
And as she trod along her way
She shown like the glittering goldWell, they'd not been gone
But about two weeks
I know it was not three
When this fair lady began to weep
She wept most bitterlyAh, why do you weep, my fair young maid
Weep it for your golden store?
Or do you weep for your house carpenter
Who never you shall see anymore?I do not weep for my house carpenter
Or for any golden store
I do weep for my own wee babe
Who never I shall see anymoreWell, they'd not been gone
But about three weeks
I'm sure it was not four
Our gallant ship sprang a leak and sank
Never to rise anymoreOne time around spun our gallant ship
Two times around spun she
Three times around spun our gallant ship
And sank to the bottom of the seaWhat hills, what hills are those, my love
That rise so fair and high?
Those are the hills of heaven, my love
But not for you and IAnd what hills, what hills are those, my love
Those hills so dark and low?
Those are the hills of hell, my love
Where you and I must go

Joan Baez, born on January 9th, 1941, is an American folk singer and a songwriter who is of mixed Mexican and Scottish descent. Baez rose to prominence in the early '60s with her stunning renditions of traditional balladry.

In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.

She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.

In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. Over fifty years after she first began singing publicly in 1958, Joan Baez continues to tour, demonstrate in favor of human rights and nonviolence, and release albums for a world of devoted fans.
