I Can Hear the Laughs Lyrics

Advisory - the following lyrics contain explicit language:
You can really fall
Wake up in a ruined house
Wrapped up
In a torn down curtainAnd when I get to hell
Will the lovely girls come down
To the banks
Of that red, red river?I can hear the laughs
When they find I've fallen down again
I can hear the laughs
And it hurts so bad I have to smileYou can take a lot

Put back not a thing
Still come home
Looking thinnerAnd when I get to Oz
Will the lovely witch come down
Kiss my pale
Bleeding brow?I can hear the laughs
When they find I've fallen down again
I can hear the laughs
And it hurts so bad I have to smile

Freedy Johnston (born 1961) is a New York City-based singer-songwriter originally from Kinsley, Kansas. Johnston's first album, "The Trouble Tree" was released in 1990, and features the guitar playing of the roots musician and author, David Hamburger. Johnston sold some of his family's farmland to finance the recording of his second album, Can You Fly (an event he wrote about in a song on that album, "Trying to Tell You I Don't Know").
