I Married You for Love Lyrics

I was counting all my riches as I stared along today
Call myself the lucky one though not a penny could I pay
You placed the ring on my hand mother nature's smiled above
You gave me your heart I gave you mine I married you for love
A mansion on a hilltop wouldn't mean a thing to me
I'd never step inside it dear if you're not there with me
I worry so if you're not by my side it's you I'm thinking of
I want you more than life itself I married you for love
[ fiddle - piano - guitar ]
A mansion on a hilltop...

Jean Shepard (born November 21, 1933 in Paul's Valley, Oklahoma as Ollie Imogene Shepard)was one of the first female vocalists in the country music field to become a major star in the early 1950's. Shepard's family moved west to Visalia, California in hopes of a better life. In high school, Shepard formed the Melody Ranch Girls, which became locally famous. One night, Country star Hank Thompson saw Shepard performing at a show and liked what he heard. With Thompson's help, Shepard was able to get a recording contract with Capitol Records in 1952.
