If I Was Washington Lyrics

By townes van zandtIf I was washington
Valleys would I forge for
If I was a fat man
Fun would I gorge for
If I was gingus
Gold would I horde for
Wish I had a dollar a dayIf I was a gouger
Gouge would I wish for
If I was a fisherman
Fish would I fish for
If I was a french whore
Frenchies I'd dish for
Wish I had a dollar a dayTurkeys are for flyin'
Chickens are for eatin'
I'm all for fun
Fun's forbidden
Forbidden's forgotten
And forgotten's for gettin'

I wish I had a dollar a dayBuzzards are for circling
Circles are for heroes
Heroes for floatin'
Fiddles to nero
Fingers for countin'
Numbers for zero
Wish I had a dollar a dayIf I was washington
Valleys would I forge for
If I was a fat man
Fun would I gorge for
If I was gingus
Gold would I horde for
Wish I had a dollar a dayIf I was washington
I'd wear wood teeth
If I was a policeman
I'd walk me a stone beat
If I was a singer
I'd stop right now
I wish I had a dollar a day

Townes Van Zandt (John Townes Van Zandt, born at Fort Worth, Texas, March 7, 1944 and died at Smyrna, Tennessee, January 1, 1997). He was a country and folk singer and poet. While alive, Van Zandt was labelled as a cult musician. Though he had a small and devoted fanbase, he never had a successful album or single, and even had difficulty keeping his recordings in print. Many of his songs, including "If I Needed You," "To Live Is To Fly," and "No Place to Fall" are considered standards of their genre. AllMusic has called him "one of the greatest country and folk artists of his generation."
