I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry Lyrics

Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
And I'm so lonesome I could cryDid you ever see a night so long
When time goes crawling by?
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide her face and cryThe silence of a fallen star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cryDid you ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die?
That means he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cryHear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
And I'm so lonesome I could cry
I'm so lonesome I could cry

Gilmore is a native of the Texas Panhandle, having been born in Amarillo, Texas and raised in Lubbock, Texas. His earliest musical influence was Hank Williams and the honky tonk brand of country music that his father played. In the 1950s, he was exposed to the emerging rock and roll of other Texans such as Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Lubbock native Buddy Holly. He was profoundly influenced in the 1960s by the likes of The Beatles and Bob Dylan and the folk music and blues revival in that decade.
