Lay Me Low Lyrics

They're gonna lay me low
(Lay me low)
They're gonna sink me in the snow
(Lay me low)
They're gonna throw back their heads and crow
(Lay me low)
When I go
(When I go)They're gonna jump and shout
(Lay me low)
They're gonna wave their arms about
(Lay me low)
All the stories will come out
(Lay me low)
When I go
(When I go)All the stars will glow bright
(Lay me low)
And my friends will give up the fight
(Lay me low)

They'll see my work in a different light
(Lay me low)
Yeah, when I go
(When I go)They'll try telephoning my mother
(Lay me low)
But they'll end up getting my brother
(Lay me low)
Who'll spill the story on some long gone lover
(Lay me low)
That I hardly know
(When I go)Hats off to the man
On top of the world
Come crawl up here, baby
And I'll show you how it worksIf you wanna be my friend
And you wanna repent
And you want it all to end
And you wanna know whenWell, do it now, don't care how
Take your final bow
Make a stand, take my hand
And blow it all to hellThey gonna inform the police chief
(Lay me low)
Who'll breathe a sigh of relief
(Lay me low)
He'll say I was a malanderer and a badlander and a thief
(Lay me low)
Yeah, when I go
(When I go)They'll interview my teachers
(Lay me low)
Who'll say I was one of God's sorrier creatures
(Lay me low)
They'll print informative six-page features
(Lay me low)
When I go
(When I go)They'll bang a big old gong
(Lay me low)
The motorcade will be ten miles long
(Lay me low)
The world'll join together for a farewell song
(Lay me low)
When they put me down below
(When I go)They'll sound a fluegelhorn
(Lay me low)
And the sea will rage and the sky will storm
(Lay me low)
All man and beast will mourn
(Lay me low)
When I go
(When I go)Hats off to the man
On top of the world
Come crawl up here, baby
And we can watch this damn thing turnIf you wanna be my friend
And you wanna repent
And you want it all to end
And you wanna know whenWell, do it now, do it now
Take a long last bow
Take my hand, make a stand
And blow it all to hellLay me low, lay me low
(Lay me low)
Lay me low, lay me low
(Lay me low)
Lay me low, lay me low
(Lay me low)
Lay me low, lay me low
Yeah, when I go, yeah, when I
(When I go)Lay me low, lay me low
(Lay me low)
Lay me low, yeah, lay me low
(Lay me low)
Lay me low, lay me low
(Lay me low)
Yeah, when I go
(When I go)Lay me low, lay me low
(Lay me low)
Lay me low, lay me low
(Lay me low)
Lay me low, lay me low
(Lay me low)
Lay me low

Australia (1984 – present)
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds was originally formed in 1984 by two former members of the Australian band The Birthday Party: Nick Cave (vocals, songwriter, keyboards, harmonica) and multi-instrumentalist Mick Harvey. They were joined by Einstürzende Neubauten member Blixa Bargeld (guitar), Hugo Race (guitar), and former Magazine member Barry Adamson (bass, piano). Cave’s former girlfriend Anita Lane was also a creative influence and occasional lyricist. This line-up recorded their debut album, From Her To Eternity, released in 1984. During their initial Australian tour, Birthday Party bass guitarist Tracy Pew also performed with the band.

The name of the new project indicated the shift in Cave’s role from band member, as in The Birthday Party, to band leader, and coincided with his shift in songwriting style from expressionism to detailed lyrical narrative. The group has been through many personnel changes, with Cave and Harvey remaining the constants.

Cave separated from Lane in the mid-1980s and began a relationship with Elisabeth Recker. While in Berlin, he released four albums with the Bad Seeds: The Firstborn Is Dead; Kicking Against the Pricks; Your Funeral… My Trial; and Tender Prey. Kicking Against the Pricks was the first album to feature the drumming of Swiss Thomas Wydler, who is the longest serving member in the band beside Cave and Mick Harvey.

In 1987, the Bad Seeds made an appearance in the Wim Wenders film, Wings of Desire. In 1990, the band collectively eliminated hard drugs from its diet, relocated to Brazil, and released The Good Son. Their next record, 1992’s Henry’s Dream, was the first to feature current members Martyn P. Casey and Conway Savage. Following it came 1994’s Let Love In.
