Leaving the City Lyrics

don't let me go
i'm fallingi'm crying on the floor
cats come to helppain is striking
in my heart
ouchi'm leaving the city
forever, to live with johnnyjohnny, gives me money
he wraps me in a blanket
calls me his 'lil burrito'oh my, my, leaving the city
piano in the back, guitar in the back
i'm going backoooh, for a while i missed my mom
then she threw lettuce at mei watched the sun come up
i watched my arms fall downi'm tired of this, tired of this
pick me to be on your teamfair and mighty, my little bird
i'm traveling, i'm leaving the cityfake a smile, show me teeth
i'm hungry for a beautiful hugturn me inside out and give me to the bears
i'm leaving the city(oh mama where's your sauce) i'm leaving the city

Joanna Newsom (born January 18, 1982) started taking piano lessons at a very early age and played for a couple of years, but switched to the harp at seven. Her approach to the harp, from the percussive aspects of her playing to her chord changes, was also influenced by West African and Venezuelan harp music, which she began studying at a folk music camp she attended in her early teens. At the same time, she also listened to more vocal-based folk, punk, and jazz like Karen Dalton, Texas Gladden, Patti Smith, and Billie Holiday.
