My Brother's a Basehead Lyrics

Make the bass come out so clear
Make the bass come out so clearThis song does not contain explicit lyrics
But what it does contain is an undesired element
This element is known as the Basehead
The lowest of lowest of all elements that exist
And the sad thing is, this particular element is me bruddaBrother, brother oh brother of mine
We used to be down as partners in crime
From our parents our name was forged
I was the Beaver, you Curious GeorgeWanted to dispose of this and that
But curiosity had killed the cat
At this age no wonder it was read
But this was the fate that you were fedThroughout high school our minds we'd waste
High off all the cheeba that we could taste
Soon you had converted to nasal sports
Every five minutes cocaine you'd snortTold me that you needed a stronger fix
Stepped to the crack scene in 86
Unlike the other drugs you had control
This substance had engulfed your body and soulNow from me you lost all respect

Said you need to put that shit in check
Wanted me to believe that you ain't tried
But your mind and the craving had coincidedSaid there was a voice I could've talked
Which said you shouldn't stop but continue to walk
Now the brother who could handle any drug
Had just found the one that could pull his PlugYo, bro, got another rock for your hiking boots
Gonna make you scream and loop three loops
Gonna take you far on a freeway, okay
Remember that day? Slipped me a smile for a 20 crack vialGuess what? Time to collect, correct
Don't have a dime? It's payback time, payback time
Don't cry the blues 'cause I got bad news
Should I stab ya? Should I bite ya? Should I use my tools?
No, I got another way to earn my defeat
(Slam the child on the hard concrete)Make the bass come out so clear
Make the bass come out so clear
Make the bass come out so clear
Make the bass come out, make the bass come outMake the bass come out so clear
Make the bass come out so clear
Make the bass come out so clear
Make the bass come out, make the bass come outBrother, brother, stupid brother of mine
Started getting high at the age of nine
Now at twenty-one you're lower than low
Nowhere to turn, nowhere to goMy dividends and wares started to disappear
Where it ended up, I had an idea
Barking you with the quickness, reversed intent
Instead went to Pop and gave him the printNow Pop grew tired of being a mouse
Finally told you to get the hell outta the house
From there a mother figure came into play
Claimed for you she saw a better dayNow Mom was a product of Christ's rebirth
Thought the only chance was to go to church
Quitting this stuff you had tried before
This time you claimed you'd really score
Something I had to see to believe
Put on my suit and to church I weavedMy, my, my, what happened to the people?
The people who used to care about what took place in the world today?
I've been summoned here today to reach the people
Who still can be reached, to save the people who still can be savedCan I get an Amen? Can I get an Amen?
Hit me, forgive us, said it's taking over, taking over the world
All it's doing is taking over, where them crackers at?
Them crackers that they serve, where they at?Bullshit, didn't believe a lick
Do this fool [Incomprehensible]
Then I gave you the benefit of a doubt
Wanted to see if you will work it outSoon you reach your front of calm
Walked round by rehearsing psalms
Then you smiled with the funky frown
What do you know, the voice is back in townMom would say it would soon go away
You and I knew it was here to stay
But the man helped you when you helped yourself
That meant going to rehab for your healthFinally it went and blew your cork
Heard you moved to the comfortable streets of New York
And when my friends see me and come and ask
"Yo, where's your brother at?", I'll be the first to splash
"Yo, he's a Basehead"Yo know who that was?
No
The guy from De La Soul, Pos. Posdnuos
Who?You heard of De La Soul, right?
Right
Well he was the one from De La Soul
The one with the real nappy hairThe one with the dark-skinned one
With the glasses? Yeah
Yeah, the ugly one
Fuck you bitch and kept goin'

De La Soul is a massively influential hip hop group, hailing from Amityville, New York, United States. They are best known for their eclectic sampling and quirky, surreal lyrics, and their contributions to the evolution of the jazz hop subgenre. They are the best known of the early alternative hip-hop acts. The members are Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos, Mercenary, Plug Wonder Why, Plug One), David Jude Jolicœur (Trugoy the Dove, Dave, Plug Two) and Vincent Mason (Pasemaster Mase, Maseo, Plug Three). The three formed the group in 1987, while still in high school and caught the attention of producer Paul Huston (Prince Paul) with a demo tape of the song "Plug Tunin'".

Their debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising (1989), was a critical smash that saw the group labeled hippies due to the message of peace and love. They quickly became prominent members of the Universal Zulu Nation, along with A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sheep, Queen Latifah, Jungle Brothers and others. They were also members of the famed Native Tongues Posse and mentioned the group often in their music (though they have since left the group for various reasons). "Me Myself and I" became a huge hit, further cementing the group's popularity. However, rock group The Turtles sued the group for sampling "You Showed Me" without permission on De La Soul's "Transmitting Live from Mars". From that point on, sampling required permission from the sources before it was released.

After 3 Feet High and Rising, De La Soul was pegged by audiences as hippies and were expected to continue creating the same type of music. This greatly agitated the group, as they always envisioned their career as a constantly changing style. This would influence their next recording sessions.
De La Soul's second album, De La Soul Is Dead (1991) was a much darker album. It featured skits that criticized the direction that hip hop was heading in at the time, though it still managed to maintain a light sense of humor. While the album is a fan favorite today, it received mixed reviews and did not sell as well as 3 Feet High and Rising.

1993's Buhloone Mindstate and 1996's Stakes Is High saw the group evolve a new sound which - though it still failed to garner commercial success - cemented their position as mainstays in the alternative hip-hop movement.

Four years later, De La Soul announced that they would release a triple album series entitled "Art Official Intelligence" (or AOI). All three albums were intended to be released within a year, beginning with the release of Art Official Intelligence: Mosaic Thump. This was followed by AOI: Bionix in late 2001. After this, however, the public saw no release of the third and final album in the AOI series. For the next two years, the only De La Soul releases were singles or remix compilations. Jolicœur (Dave) stated in an interview that it usually takes about four years for the group to record an album, promote it with advertisements, touring and so on. The group was having trouble finishing the last AOI installment for many reasons, one of which being an ongoing struggle with Tommy Boy Records, who had been releasing their albums ever since their debut.

In 2004, De La Soul ended up releasing a new full album: The Grind Date on Sanctuary Records. Although it was not the new AOI album their fans had been anticipating, it was released to some critical acclaim and was well received by most fans. The album also receives recognition for being the seventh studio album from the group.

In 2005, they were featured on the Gorillaz single, "Feel Good Inc." and on the LA Symphony single "Universal" They also made an apearance on superFast Jellyfish on the album Plastic beach by Gorrilaz in early 2010
