Near Death; Or, The Search Rewarded Lyrics

One cold winter day, in Wisconsin they say,
Two little cats, one tabby one grey
Went walking along as the sun went down
And were lost in the woods on the wrong side of town.
Poor cats in the woods.
Back home little Al and Suzy and Sal
Bawled as they called for their little cat pals.
They snuffled and sniffed in a big handkerchief
And thought of their cats lying frozen and stiff.
Poor cats in the woods.
Next morning they looked and out there in the yard
Was the Sheriff's department and the National Guard.
Two choppers set down with a possee from town
And the general said "men those two cats must be found"
I mean those poor cats out in the woods.

They found them both rolled in a ball from the cold.
They had crawled in a hole full of silver and gold.
Their fortune was made and the mortgage was paid
And those cats in fine pajamas were sweetly arrayed.
Poor cats in the woods.
Once ragged and poor now the best could they afford
Sister Nell she was saved from a man she abhorred.
Little Benny recovered and he stood by the door
As Daddy came home, never drank any more.
Poor cats in the woods.
Poor cats in the woods.
