Nothing Ever Happens Lyrics

Post office clerks put up signs
Saying, 'Position Closed'
And secretaries turn off typewriters
And put on their coatsJanitors padlock the gates
For security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat showAnd theyll all be lonely tonight
And lonely tomorrowGentlemen, time please
You know we cant serve anymore
Now the traffic lights change to 'Stop'
When theres nothing to goAnd by five Oclock everythings dead
And every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college labAnd nothing ever happens
Nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And well all be lonely tonight

And lonely tomorrowTelephone exchanges click
While theres nobody there
The Martians could land in the car park
And no one would careClose-circuit cameras in department stores
Shoot the same video every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
Just survive constant action replayAnd nothing ever happens
Nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And well all be lonely tonight
And lonely tomorrowAnd bill hoardings advertise products
That nobody needs
While angry from Manchester
Writes to complain about all the repeats on T.V.And computer terminals report some gains
On the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs
For the price of a hospital wingAnd nothing ever happens
Nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like beforeAnd nothing ever happens
Nothing happens at all
Theyll burn down the synagogues at six oclock
And well all go along like before
And well all be lonely tonight
And lonely tomorrow

Del Amitri are a Pop-rock guitar band, formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 1980. They came together at school as teenagers when Justin Currie (bass and vocals), James Scobbie (guitar and vocals) and Donald Bentley (guitar) formed a band in reaction against the rest of the 'rockers' in the school. The name was chosen deliberately because it didn't mean anything but sounded a bit like someone's name - early Del Amitri did not want to be classified and their existence was kept secret from the rest of the school.
