Once Were Lovers Lyrics

We shared a life, we shared a heart
But what we united seems to be breaking apart
It's a haunting pain, goes right to the core
Now we're dividing what's mine from what's yoursI'll keep the same old things I had when we met
And you'll keep what's yours 'cause that would only be fair
But what about the heart that we both created together? We used to be the toast of the town
We used to have the best love of all
We had blue skies but they came falling down
What happened to us, you and I once were lovers? No cheating hearts and no one did wrong
So why did we break, can't say our love wasn't strong
But I know with time things that start to mend
So let's fix these hearts so they can't be broken againYou need a man who sees how lonely you've been
Don't worry, I will start all over and then
We will get back the heart that we both created togetherWe used to be the toast of the town
We used to have the best love of all
We had blue skies but they came falling down
What happened to us, you and I once were lovers?Last night I cried but, girl, you were not here
So it was just a big waste of tears

But then I smiled, I heard your voice in my ear
Tellin' me you wish it could be like it was in the beginning
I miss you, baby, I love the awayWe used to be the toast of the town
We used to have the best love of all
We had blue skies but they came falling down
What happened to us, you and I once were lovers?

Luther Ronzoni Vandross (April 20, 1951 - July 1, 2005) was an american soul and rnb singer whose career spanned four decades.

In the 70s, he worked as a backing singer Chic and for David Bowie (on the Young Americans album). He later found success as a solo artist with Superstar and A House Is Not A Home.

In the 80s, Vandross was a vocalist on early Change singles (Searching), whilst continuing his solo career with such releases as "Never Too Much", "Power Of Love/Love Power", "If Only For One Night", "Here And Now".

In the 90s, he was more famous for duets with Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey (amongst others), than for his solo work.

It was an ongoing battle with his weight that may have ultimately proved his undoing. He suffered a stroke in 2003, from which he never really recovered, and died in 2005.

During his career, he sold 25 million albums and won eight Grammy awards including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance four times. He won four Grammy awards in 2004, including the Grammy Award for Song of the Year for the track "Dance With My Father," co-written with Richard Marx.
