River Guard Lyrics

When I take the prisoners swimming
They have the time of their lives
I love to watch them floatingOn their backs
Unburden and relaxedI sit in the tall grass and look the other way
And when I hall them in they always sing
Our sencencess will not servedWe are constantly on trial
It's a way to be freeMost nights, I go for a drive to to the highest place, I can find
Stand there on a cliff with gooseflesh
Watching the wind rip the leaves of the treesDeath defying, every breath
Death defyingSoon we all be back in the yard behind the wall
Leaving heart
Dreaming of cool rivers and tall grassWe are constantly on trial
It's a way to be freeWe are constantly on trial
It's a way to be free

Bill Callahan, born in Silver Spring, Maryland. Callahan followed the lo-fi genre of underground rock, with homemade tape-albums recorded on four track tape recorders. Later he signed a record contract with the label drag city. Callahan started out as a highly experimental artist, utilizing sub-standard instruments and recording equipment. His reason for using the lo-fi approach was not so much an aesthetic choice, rather it came from his lack of knowledge of recording studios, and fear of giving up control to professional engineers.
