Safe & Sound Lyrics

Static, Quik, you're not a gangster, we're not staticSome believe in love and some believe in friends
But, niggaz, like me believe in making ends
'Cause even when your bitch wants to trick around
You know the money's got you safe and soundNow I'm 'bout to take it back to '84, when I was fourteen
Kickin' back in the trees, West Side, if you please
And, four-thirty-six, West Spruce was the spot
With me, Wayne, Mike, Shot, Nookie, Slug and RockDonzelly, if ya with me, than let that shit, kick
If your head ain't spinning from dippin' all them sticks
'Cause way back in the day they used love a wet baggie
Screaming, HORALE, ESE, with them laces on a caddyAnd you couldn't deny a hit from that Buddah, Tye
Going round and round the driveway, now it's coming my way
And I'm zoned out at a young age
And the whole spruce street was my stagePeep, now back then I was in the eighth grade, steady
But niggaz, my age was getting paid, already
Yeah, like that nigga, Zam or even young, Blue
They made they first million by the age of, twenty-twoLike, Dan from Cedar block, him and little Motor
James from Piru Street, with them boulders
Rest in peace, little Noopy, he didn't have to brag

Rollin' to the tenth grade in a Fint, '0' ragWell, goddamn, how can I be down?
I ask my sister, Jack for some help and she told me, look around
Nigga, they don't sell dope, it sells itself
While they kick back and just collect the wealthAnd now I'm thinking, ain't nothing fly, about these dirty ass, khakis
T-shirt dingy, prowings tackie
This could be a way to flip that little, funky, twenty dollars, that I earned
Right then, is when I learned thatSome believe in Jesus, some believe in Allah
But niggaz like me, believe in making dollars
'Cause even when, yo, niggaz, wanna be untrue
You know the money's still good to youYes, yes
Some believe in love and some believe in friends
But niggaz like me, believe in making ends
'Cause even when, yo, bitch wants to trick around
You know the money's got you safe and soundPeep, I gets a dub on the first and fifteenth, for a fact
So, instead of spending it up, I gave my money to Jack
Now she jump in the Regal and said, "I'll be right back"
When she came in, she put me down with a plastic sackI turned my forty into eighty and that was my profit
I'm keepin' my rocks in the house and not in my pocket
Sister, Jackie in the kitchen with some boiling water, baking soda
Fresh powder, baby bottles, making more bouldersChecking a fat grip, slanging rocks to tricks
Donzelly, dippin' sticks, went and bought 'em a six
And five-hundred, block, peach, running thangs, ya see
Moving gallon after gallon and key after keyI'm telling you, I done, seen it all
From, niggaz, hitting the Sherman and the pass out on the wall
From cluckers, wanting a hit so bad, they let there panties fall
Teeth rotten, hair gone and whole checks, get blownBut then, I'm still breaking these pebbles like Bam Bam
Saved them, splitting rocks, to the 'em, tic-toc
I went from wearing khakis to Sergio Teccini
While my rocks is disappearing like the great HoudiniI bought a gang of clothes, all of my equipment
And getting somthing new with each and every shipment
Money gets made and money gets spent
And how these jealous niggaz acting, only makes it evident thatSome believe in Jesus, some believe in Allah
You know the money's got you safe and soundCheck, now in 1981, moved away to L.A.
My niggaz, playa, Ham and Gina gave me a place to stay
On my way up from bottom rock, bitches, starting to jock
'Cause my hair is getting longer and games, getting strongerTo pull my own weight, I went and got me a job
But by then, Ham and Gina really started to squab
About weather, I should go or stay
She told him either he goes or you go, we both was on our waySo, he moved and took me with him on, two-thousand-one, Browning
Clowning with playas, all around me, just astounding
My nigga, pimpin, Carl got staring with that hair an
Rolling up and down the street in that, rag seven with DarrenShaby, blue feathered, as he swerved
In the 'E l Co-P, 6, park away from the curve
Big jam, L.A Mike, Darryl, Nicki on the bike
That nigga Top Big Shane, and Tweed rolling up the weedAnd hoes, just come and go in and out
Revolving door, leaving with some, nut in they mouth
I'm making a living of pimpin' so you fools can't trip
'Cause even though, I love God, I also love my gripSome believe in Jesus, some believe in Allah
You know the money's got you safe and soundOoh, yeah, safe and sound, yeah
Safe and sound, baby, ooh, yeah
Safe and sound yeah, safe and soundGotta let you know, gotta let you know
Gotta let you know, Compton's in the house

DJ Quik (born David Martin Blake on January 18, 1970) is a West Coast rapper and record producer from Compton, California. He was raised at 436 West Spruce Street in Compton, California. As a teen he took up an affiliation with the Tree Top Piru Bloods, hence why his name is spelled Quik with the C conspicuously missing. A lot of Bloods would let the name "Quick" (because CK stands for Crip Killer) but he chose "Quik" to represent the Red but at the same time in some form of respect for the other side . He grew up without a father and moved out of his mother's home when he was only 17. He lived in the house as the only male with 8 sisters. His home life was far from stable as he raps in a song that one of his sisters was selling drugs to one of his other sisters. He began selling homemade mixtapes (like "The Red Tape", 1987) after he received a turntable for his 9th grade graduation and then began doing shows DJing around Southern California when he moved out. He signed to Profile Records in the summer of 1990, reportedly as the label's first six figure signee. Not only could he rap and write his own songs, he could produce as well.

His debut album, "Quik Is The Name" was led by the success of two top 20 R&B singles, "Tonite" and "Born and Raised in Compton." "Tonite" even charted on the pop charts. The album ended up reaching 10th on the album charts. None of his successive albums reached the success of his debut, though they have been well received in California, particularly his 1998 release "Rhythm-Al-Ism." His most popular albums are Quik Is The Name and Safe + Sound. . On "Safe + Sound" appears "Dollaz And Sense," which was a diss track to Compton rapper and member of the rival Tragniew Park Crips MC Eiht. Though full of bravado at the time, Quik now admits to fearing for his life during the period.

Instead of joining the G-Funk movement during the 1990's, DJ Quik had his own style that a new version of P-Funk, inspired by artists like Roger Troutman (who even taught him the use of the talkbox, which became a trademark for Quik's sound in the 1990's) and George Clinton. Throughout his career, Quik has collaborated with and produced for artists including 2Pac ("Heartz of Men", "Words To My First Born", "Late Night"), Janet Jackson ("All For You"), Snoop Dogg (e.g. "Doin' Too Much", "Buss'n Rocks", "Don't Tell"), Talib Kweli ("Put It In The Air"), Whitney Houston ("Fine"), Kurupt ("Can't Go Wrong"), Jay-Z ("Justify My Thug"), Xzibit ("Sorry I'm Away So Much"), Ludacris ("Spur of the Moment"), Chingy ("Bagg Up", and "Wurr's My Cash"),Dr. Dre, 2nd II None, Hi-C, Suga Free ("Street Gospel" album and on the "New Testament" album), 8Ball & MJG ("Buck Bounce") and others. Though he formally produced only "Heartz of Men" on 2Pac's masterpiece "All Eyez On Me" album, he went uncredited for work on many other tracks on the album; on that track he used his real name David Blake, because Profile did not allow him to use his stage name. In 2002, he produced Truth Hurts' Top 10 pop hit "Addictive". Quik used an uncleared Hindi sample on the record, and the copyright holders eventually filed a $500 million dollar lawsuit against Truth Hurts' label, Aftermath Entertainment.

Quik faced personal and professional tragedy when his friend and protegé Mausberg was murdered on the 4th of July, 2000. This was compounded by the death of his best friend Daryl Reed soon after.

Following 2000's "Balance and Options" CD he was dropped by Arista Records which in 1998 had bought Profile Records. In September 2005, DJ Quik released his first independent album on his own new label, Mad Science, which was supposed to be distributed by Warner Bros but Quik was forced to let Time Warner and so signed his Mad Science with Fontana/Universal. The album is titled "Trauma" and reflects the turmoil in the producer's life over the past few years. He than released "Trauma: Instrumentals". In recent years he has worked with a 74 piece orchestra during a collaboration with Marcus Miller while working on the score to the movie "Head of State." Over the years, Quik has morphed from a hardcore gangsta rapper to a mainstream producer and rapper who is not afraid to change his style. He has not abandoned his West Coast roots and now produces very much his own unique style.
