State Run Radio Lyrics

You must be
A radio station
And who are we, we must be
A number one songs spinning all day long
And over again and over again
And over again and over again
And over again and we know when
When we call in and nothing's free
Sounds to me like
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
We interrupt this broadcast
To bring you this special message 'bout the forecast
The future's cloudy and it's rainin' on the poor class
Road to peace is closed, heavy traffic's on the war paths
Love is ballin' on a budget

The military says it's gon' need more cash
To keep fighting for your gas, keep us in our hoods
And hope we never explore pass, stay inside of your half
Believe the lies you learned in your class
That there's no treasure in your trash
And the ceiling has the same feeling that the floor has
And that's where you should stay, this is what they play
Over again and over again
And over again and over again
And over again and we know when
When we call in and nothing's free
Sounds to me like
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
Your now tuned into the weakest
Frequency of fear, keep you locked right here
And hope you never leave this, never be a leader
Think inside the box and follow all procedures
Never ever believe that you will never need this
Hit up all your friends and tell them to repeat this
Hi, you're on the air, now what you wanna hear?
We ain't got the truth but how about a remix?
Different is never good, good is only what we pick
You ain't got a hit unless it sounds like these did
Not too smart, you will be a superstar
And if you dumb or something maybe you could be number one
Over again and over again
And over again and over again
And over again and we know when
When we call in and nothing's free
Sounds to me like
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
So beware what's on the airwaves
And be more aware of what's not getting' airplay
Independent spirit, you can barely hear what they're sayin'
Truth ain't gettin' on like shampoo on an airplane
Propaganda's everywhere, constantly on replay
All the hits, all the time, back to back on relay
When really where it lives, make the records we play
Build your own station, become your own DJs
You must be
A radio station
And who are we, we must be
A number 1 songs spinning all day long
And you put me
In daily rotation
You're on the air, we know your scam
But we don't care, we'll play here
Over again and over again
And over again and over again
And over again and we know when
When we call in and nothing's free
Sounds to me like
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio
State run radio, state run radio

Wasalu Muhammad Jaco (born February 16, 1982 in Chicago, Illinois), better known by his stage name Lupe Fiasco, is a Grammy Award-winning American hip-hop artist and producer. He first became known to the mainstream hip-hop community in 2005 when he appeared on Kanye West's album Late Registration on the track "Touch the Sky." In 2006 Lupe released his debut album, Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor on Atlantic Records, and in December 2007 he released his second full length album, Lupe Fiasco's The Cool. His next studio album, entitled Lasers, was released on March 8th 2011 after a protest against Atlantic's decision not to release it.

The Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free) Songfacts reports that Fiasco’s first single off his fourth studio album, Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1 debuted on May 21, 2012. On "Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free)," he spits rhymes about aspects of modern American life he doesn’t like such as "Suicide bombers and prosperity gospels, emaciated models, with cocaine and blood pouring out their nostrils” as well as socio-political problems in Ghana and the invasion of Iraq.

Lupe has previously been on label Epic with his group Da Pak and then signed a solo deal with Arista. His years at Arista only led to the 2003 promo single "Pop Pop" as well as guest appearances on singles from Tha' Rayne (2002's "Kiss Me" and 2003's "Didn't You Know") and K Fox (2003's "This Life"), then Arista folded in 2004 and Lupe was signed to Atlantic Records.
