Ramesh Vinayagam was born Ramasubramaniam (AKA ramsubbu) to Tamil people Vinayagam and Valli. He went to A. M. Jain College and later graduated in Commerce from the University of Madras. He learned Carnatic from Rukmini Ramani and Western classical music from Jacob John and completed his studies at the Trinity College, London with a diploma. Vinayagam said that his ambition was to become a composer but he faced opposition from his parents and he instead took up a job as a manager in his father's friend's firm.
