Swing Down, Chariot Lyrics

Why don't you swing down sweet chariot, stop and let me ride
Swing down chariot, stop and let me ride
Oh rock me lord, rock me lord
Calm and easy
I've got a home on the other sideWhy don't you swing down sweet chariot, stop and let me ride
Swing down chariot, stop and let me ride
Oh rock me lord, rock me lord
Calm and easy I've got a home on the other sideSwing swing swing swing...Looked over yonder, what did I see?
Two white chariots, lord coming after me
Two white horses running side by side
Swing down sweet chariot, lord and let me try to rideWhy don't you, swing down chariot, stop and let me ride Swing down chariot, stop and let me ride
Oh rock me lord, rock me lord
Calm and easy I've got a home on the other sideI met my mother this morning, coming up the hill so soon Trying to get to heaven in due time, 'fore the heaven doors close
Trying to get to heaven in due time, 'fore the heaven doors closeWake me, shake me, don't let me sleep too late
Wake up, judgement in the morning, swing on the golden gate
Wake up, judgement in the morning, swing on the golden gateWake me, shake me, don't let me sleep to late
Trying to get to heaven in due time, 'fore the heaven doors close
Trying to get to heaven in due time, 'fore the heaven doors closeDon't you know that I'm bound I'm bound for higher ground

I'm seeking the golden crown
Can't remain on this earthly plane I'm bound for higher ground
I'm bound, I'm bound for higher ground
I'm seeking, I'm seeking the golden crown
Can't remain on this earthly plane, I'm bound for higher ground

The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul, and R&B singing group from Chicago who signed their first professional contract in 1952. Roebuck "Pops" Staples (1914–2000), the patriarch of the family, formed the group with his children Cleotha (1934–2013), Pervis (b. 1935), Yvonne (b. 1936), and Mavis (b. 1939). They are best-remembered for their 1970s hits "Respect Yourself", "I'll Take You There", "If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)", and "Let's Do It Again". In 1999 the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
