Tax Free Lyrics

Front rooms, back rooms slide into tables
Crowd into bathrooms, joke around
Cheap talk, deep talk, talk, talk, around the clockCrawl home, lie down, teeth chatter, heart pounds
I don't feel so good, I don't feel so good
Push a button to escapePreacher on the tube crying, "Lord, here's evil
In this land, rock 'n' roll music, cast down
These dope-fiends an' their noisy bands, damn their souls"Preacher preachin' love like vengeance
Preachin' love like hate, callin' for large donations
Promisin' estates, rollin' lawns an' angel bands
Behind the pearly gates, you know, he will have his
In this life but yours will have to waitHe's immaculately tax free
Multiple hundreds of thousands of tax free
Hundreds and millions of dollars, tax free
A hundred billion dollars, and who is paying the price?
Who, who? Your children arePissed off, jacked up, scream into the mike
Spit into the lovin' cup, strut like a rooster, march like a man
God's hired hands and the devil bandsPacking the same grandstands, different clothes
Pot in their pockets, different hair, sexually active

Raise a screamin' guitar or a Bible in the air
Theater of anguish, theater of glory
God's hired hands and the devil bandsOh, come let us adore, me
Lord, there's danger in this land
You get witch-hunts and wars
When church and state hold handsFuck it, tonight I'm going dancin'
With the drag queens and the punks
Big beat deliver me from this sanctimonious skunk
We're no flamin' angels, he's not Heaven sent
How can he speak for the 'Prince of Peace'
When he's hawk-right militantHe's immaculately tax free
Our nation has lost its guts, save me
Our nation has lost its strength, tax free
Our nation has whimpered and cried, save meAnd petted the Castros, tax free
The Khomeinis and the Kaddafis, save me
For so long, tax free
That we don't know how to act like a man, save meI think that we should turn the United States Marines lose
On that little island south of Florida an' stop that problemI am preachin' love, I am

Joni Mitchell, CC, (born Roberta Joan Anderson; 7 November 1943 - Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada) is a musician, singer-songwriter, poet and painter. Mitchell began singing in small nightclubs in her native Western Canada and then busking on the streets of Toronto. Her writing and art talent emerged before her exposure as a gifted musician performing in Western Canada, including Winnipeg, where she met Neil Young. She then associated with the burgeoning folk music scene of the mid-1960s in New York City.

Recording her début album in 1968 and achieving fame first as a songwriter ("Urge for Going", "Chelsea Morning", "Both Sides, Now", "Woodstock") and then as a singer in her own right. Finally settling in Southern California, Mitchell played a key part in the folk rock movement then sweeping the musical landscape. Blue, her starkly personal 1971 album, is regarded as one of the strongest and most influential records of the time. Mitchell also had pop hits such as "Big Yellow Taxi", "Free Man in Paris", and "Help Me", the last two from 1974's best-selling Court and Spark.

In 1975 Joni released "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" which can be seen as an artistic turning point, and the beginning of her unique blend of folk, jazz and rock. It was intended as a concept album of sorts, with the "concept" being the contrast being freedom and slavery, and the idea that wealth and status sometimes ironically place a great many constraints on people's behavior.

Mitchell is also an accomplished visual artist. She has, through photography or painting, created the artwork for each of her albums, and has described herself as a "painter derailed by circumstance". A blunt critic of the music industry, Mitchell has stopped recording over the last several years, and now focuses mainly on her visual art, although she released a new album - Shine on 25th September 2007.
