The Day Lyrics

The trees gave up their roots
And the lepers left their caves
All the rattlesnakes came down from the mountain
And the kings all became slavesOn the day
That my Lord came
The fire split the beams, the wall's comin' down
The day my Lord cameThe tears filled up my eyes
The curtain has been drawn
To lay to waste this land to me
Is like the beauty of the breaking of the dawnAnd as a black hand swept across the earth
I knew that the day came
When the fish float on the water with their bellies up
I know, I know that the day cameAll the rattlesnakes came down from the mountain
And the kings all became slaves
The trees gave up their roots from the earth
And the lepers left their cavesOn the day
That my Lord cameThe coyotes left their dens
The horses left their stables

And they bowed down to the ground
Every creature that was ableA blanket of moss will cover the earth
And I'll know that the day cameIt's the shifting of the guards
Time to start anew
The old gods have all failed
And their successors tooMy King, my King will wipe the slate clean
Houses become tombs
My King, my King will take what grows
And every creature's womb and make it His ownMy King, He is displeased
To be forgotten and alone
And the ones who came before
Well, the valley is filled with their bonesI am the storm brewing up in the east, the west
From every direction at once

Indiana's Murder by Death (formerly known as Little Joe Gould) layers the vocal sounds of an old saloon with the haunting strings of a Hungarian folk dance and the hard driving rhythms of pure rock 'n' roll, producing what Stuff magazine has called "lush, orchestrated songs," somehow simultaneously reminiscent of Johnny Cash and Radiohead. Added to that thick and intriguing sound are a series of dark and ironic lyrics, combining the mood and tone of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds with the narrative force of The Decemberists or a short story by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
