The Man You Want Me to Be Lyrics

I played the fool so long, thought I was so strong
All the while You knew it wasn't true
Rerunning in my mind, memories of another time
When all I ever lived for was YouJesus, make me the man that You want me to be
Jesus, make me the man that You want me to beI've been listening all my life, words are spoken all the time
I have heard the liars and the true
Voices twisting in the air, sweetly sounding so unclear
But nothing can replace a word from YouJesus, make me the man that You want me to be
Jesus, make me the man that You want me to beA child is but for so long, turn around those days are gone
Nothing can replace the years of youth
I have swallowed lies that tasted true
The plans I thought were sent from You
When all You wanted was for me to be stillJesus, make me the man that You want me to be
Jesus, make me the man You want to seeThe burning in the heart of man's deepest desire
Is rising like a flame, oohJesus, make us the men you want us to be
Jesus, make me the man You want me to beThe burning in the heart of our deepest desire
Is rising like a flame, burning higher and higher
Burning in the heart of our deepest desire

Is to know YouThe burning in the heart of our deepest desire
Is rising like a flame, burning higher and higher
Burning in the heart of our deepest desire
Is to know You
(Jesus)The burning in the heart of our deepest desire
Is rising like a flame, burning higher and higher
Burning in the heart of our deepest desire
Is to know You
(Yeah)Jesus, make us the men you want us to be

Phil was born in Auckland, New Zealand and was adopted at birth. He left school to become a hairdresser. In his free time, he was lead singer and guitarist in the band Drinkwater. Though he had little experience with the instrument, Newsboys offered him a position as bassist in 1995. He said at the time, "I already know how to play a guitar with six strings, four should be a cinch.
