The Orphan King Lyrics

My mama had held me one time then kissed me goodbye
Bu I still believe in love
She never came back and I don't know why
But I still believe in love
She passed me her crown on her way out of town
But I still believe in love
She left me this kingdom to wear it around
But I still believe in loveHail the Orphan King!
Wth the crooked smile and a crackerjack ring
An alley cat court and a song to sing
I still believe in loveHail, Hail the Orphan King!
With the crooked smile and a crackerjack ring
An alley cat court and a song to sing
I still believe in loveYou don't know alone til you sit on a throne
But I still believe in love
And a castle ain't a home
It's just hunger and stone
But I believe in loveThe only love I had I borrowed and stole

But I still believe in love
Now the kindness of strangers is my ace in the hole
I still believe in loveHail, the orphan King!
With the crooked smile and a crackerjack ring
An alley cat court and a song to sing
I still believe in loveI sleep in parked cars I drink in graveyards
Woke up in the school-yard face down by a squad car
I am the KingHail the Orphan King
With a crooked smile and a crackerjack ring
And a crackerjack ring
It ain't easy being king
BUT I STILL BELIEVE
HAIL THE ORPHAND KING!
SUPERHERO OF SUFFERING
LIKE MOSES AND BATMAN
AND JAMES DEAN
I still Believe in love

Mary Gauthier (born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1962) is an American country and folk singer/songwriter. Given up at birth by a mother she never knew, Mary was adopted. At age 15, she ran away from home and stole her parents' car, and spent the next several years in detox, halfway houses, and living with friends; she spent her 18th birthday in jail. These experiences provided fodder for her songwriting later on (particularly her song "Drag Queens in Limousines").
