The Story of OVO Lyrics

(Only available on some editions)
A long time ago, in a far away land
Theo was the man who learned to understand
The riches of the earth
And all that it was worth
The first man that ever tried to stand with his own plan
Now this man was all about the wind rain and trees
He knew that it would take care of all of his family needsNow Ion was the son who spent his nights and days
Looking for all kinds of ways to get his father's praise
In all daddy's ways he just wanted to impress
Make it faster, stronger is what he tried to stressSofia was the girl
Living in her own world
She found love and joy with a young sky boy
Sky boys were seen as less to the rest
So it would seem
Sofia went into the woods to daydream
With love in her eyes
Her own father would despise

Her love for the young sky boy he would destroyFeet in the earth
Heads in the sky
We watch the world go by
Feet in the earth
Heads in the sky
We watch as life goes byWhen Theo was gone, his son Ion took the power
And in his daddy's name, he built the biggest strongest tower
The earth people and sky people divided by machines
And the ones who had nothing were the ones who had the wingsThe sky boy just wanted everything to be equal
From full-time lover to now fighting for his peopleNow Beth was the mom
Who really loved to weave
She couldn't believe her own son would decieve
The sky people got hungry and their welfare was ignored
She let them in the tower and the bloody battle roared
Down came iron and the tower fell as well
The dark days were over and the sky people's hellFeet in the earth
Heads in the sky
We watch the world go by
Feet in the earth
Heads in the sky
We watch as life goes bySofia and the sky boy had long been kept apart
Sofia grief was faded it was joy that filled her heart
Wrapped in his loving wings Sofia took her man
So the earth and sky united
It was all father's planTheo kept an acorn
Sofia had carefully safely saved
It was planted in the ground that her brother had once paved
With a rustling and a creaking an unearthly sound
Something big started growing right out of the fertile groundIt was the biggest tree that any of the people ever seen
And it covered up the sky with a layer of leafy green
Then it rained and it rained and they watched the waters rise
Then Sofia led her people to the safety of the skiesFeet in the earth
Heads in the sky
We watch the world go by
Feet in the earth
Heads in the sky
We watch as life goes byShe climbed and she climbed
But never giving up
So pregnant and exhausted
Finally made it to the top
She looked into the sky and the world began to turn
And with a single cry a new baby had arrivedWith OVO in his nest, everyone one had done their best
To prepare for the world and every single test
Soon he was blessed and as his mother stood by
He was soon released and sailed off into the sky

Peter Gabriel is an internationally famous musician and Third World activist, and was the original lead singer with Genesis. He is not only known for his Eastern and African-influenced music, but also for several ground-breaking music videos (most notably Sledgehammer, his highest-charting release on both sides of the Atlantic).

After leaving Genesis, Peter Gabriel began to experiment with various elements of world music as the underpinning for his dense, poetic lyrics. Although he released a series of successful song-oriented albums, Peter Gabriel 1, 2, 3, and 4 (aka Car, Scratch, Melt, and Security), he didn't really hit a commercial high until 1986 with his now seminal album So and its slightly less successful counterpart Us. After this came a 10 year hiatus until the album Up came out. This was followed by the ground breaking Growing Up tour. There was a DVD released of this tour. The latest studio album from Gabriel is 2010's Scratch My Back. He has also composed and recorded soundtracks for films as diverse as Birdy (which contained re-purposed snippets of his studio albums to date), Passion: Music from The Last Temptation of Christ, and Rabbit Proof Fence. He also sang the Randy Newman composed title song to Babe: Pig in the City called That'll Do. He recently contributed to the wall-e soundtrack, singing the end title song Down to Earth, and composing two other tracks.

He created one of the more innovative videos of its time for the song Sledgehammer, with the then-fledgling Aardman Animations studio.

He was also instrumental in founding the long-running festival organization WOMAD (World Of Music Art and Dance), and participated in the UK millennium celebration, for which he wrote the musical OVO. The recording studio he built, Real World, and the record label it spawned, have brought many artists from around the world to the attention of Western ears.

Peter Gabriel also wrote the music for The Millennium Show which was performed throughout the year 2000 in The Millennium Dome. The arena where The Millennium Show was performed is now the O2 Arena.

Rumors of reunion with his former band have persisted, with conflicting information that changes almost daily, although he has confirmed he will not play a part in Genesis' reunion tour.
[note: the reunion WAS in rehearsals when Gabriel decided not to do it because he felt like he wasn't having enough input.]
