The Thief (Live, Winnipeg Folk Festival) Lyrics

A new wind will blow through everything
Through everything I knowI was looking into every car
Hoping that someone might see and look back
I knew I let it out too far, I watched it go
I couldn't get it all backSlowed it down below a waltz
Where there was hardly any sway or grace left
It was so slow you could see my faults
Every solitary step and misstepDown like a leaf in the long grass I lay for hours
The thief made off but not with everything
There was a glow still under the ashes
The past was getting ready to let go
If a new wind would blowWalking into every room
In the aftermath the place felt haunted
By all the things we didn't do
And the memory of what we wantedSlowed it down below a waltz
Where there was hardly any sway or grace left
It was so slow you could see all my faults
Every solitary step and misstepDown like a leaf in the long grass I lay for hours

The thief made off but not with everything
There was a glow still under the ashes
The past was getting ready to let go
If a new wind would blow
