The Underdog Lyrics

I wake up just to work hard every day
Nothin' free and nothin' easy ever comes my way
Hands are calloused, my body is bruisedI won't give up and I will not lose
Just when you count me out
That's when I'll come throughI'm the underdog
The one whose back stays against the wall
The underdog
I'll still be standin' when the favorite fallsSo they say I'm not that strong
And the odds are way too long
Well, I was born to prove them wrong
I'm the underdogMy baby's the best lookin' thing to hit this town
She believes in me even though her folks
Don't want me comin' 'roundThey got bigger plans for her than me
I've got somethin' inside they can't see
But someday I swear they will
'Cause I won't always beOh, the underdog
The one whose back stays against the wall
The underdog

I'll still be standin' when the favorite fallsSo they say I'm not that strong
And the odds are way too long
Well, I was born to prove them wrong
I'm the underdog, yeahI know every verse and every word of 1st Samuel 17
I love it when that big old boy's bought down to his knees
And it sometimes seems that all my dreams
Are over nine feet tallAnd I'm the little man
With a rock in his hand
Just like David in overallsI'm the underdog
The one whose back stays against the wall
The underdog
I'll still be standin' when the favorite fallsSo they say I'm not that strong
And the odds are way too long
Well, I was born to prove them wrong
I'm the underdogOh, I'm the underdog
Don't you count me out
Yeah

Steve Azar was born and raised in Greenville, Mississippi at the entrance to the Mississippi Delta. His mother was raised above the family grocery store located on Highway 61 in Clarksdale, MS near the infamous “Crossroads”. “The Crossroads” is the intersection of Route 61 and Route 49, or the 61/49 split as they call it there, in Clarksdale, Mississippi, made famous in the Robert Johnson song, “Cross Road Blues”. This is where Delta Blues legend Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the Devil in exchange for mastery of the blues, or so the story goes.
